Word Prom 2015 and the Collective Hand Mural
On May 16th, I attended an event called Word Prom. This event was created to promote diversity and acceptance of all people in the valley. It allowed for the Roaring Fork Valley's youth to express what life is like for those part of the LGBTQ spectrum. We read poetry, met new friends, and even meet some adults who have gone through the struggle of being a part of the LGBTQ community. It taught kids to accept themselves for who they are, and that they have support valley-wide. The reason I put this in the giver section, is because I created a mural for the event that engaged the people attending. I painted the phrase "I am only human" on a huge white sheet, hung it outside of the event, and let the magic happen. The idea behind it was to create a collective mural that everyone could add to and work together on. It was to show that no matter who you are or what you believe in, we are all human and we can all work together to create something beautiful. People loved the idea and were excited to add their own handprint. This piece will travel to all high schools in the valley to be showcased to promote diversity and LGBTQ acceptance and Gay-Straight alliance. We are all one <3
The Backstage, Tech Crew Life
Helping Kether Axelrod with her middle school productions, has been a blessing and a leraning expirience. I worked as a backstage tech person, and I also did makeup. I learned how to work with body microphones, change them, and how complicated mic ques can be. I observed the amount of hard work and effort it takes to make a production happen. I also got to practice my makeup skills on many willing faces, which was a great oppertunity. Last but not least, I have learned just how difficult it can be to work with 40-50 middle schoolers at once. IT"S STRESSFUL< AND I NEVER WANT CHILDREN!!!! But I volunteered to do this out of the goodness of my heart. I have done this more than once, and I will continue to support Kether because I value her friendship, and I know she needs the help. I have devoted many hours, many supplies, and basically gave my soul up for this. It"s all worth it to see the turnout in the end, and know that you were a part in making it happen.
Interim week #1 (Job Shadowing + Volunteer Work)
Day #1
I started my job shadowing a little early, so on Sunday, I attended the Aspen Poet Society poetry reading at Victoria's Espresso & Wine Bar. I stuck out like a sore thumb because I was the only young person there, but I enjoyed hearing the poetry. There was an open mic, but unfortunately, I didn't read. But I did get a signed book of the featured poets (Karen Glenn) work. It was a great experience!
Day #2
I pretty much helped my parents work at their motel in Basalt, Colorado. It's called the Aspenalt Lodge. I learned some customer service skills, and I learned about how owning a lodging business works.
Day #3
I worked a few hours at a thrift shop in Basalt, called Heirlooms. I learned how to sort inventory, Manage prices, and help customers. Then I helped teach an art class to 4th grade boys at the Wyly Community Art Center in Basalt. I learned about Encaustic painting techniques, and a little about how to teach kids that don't wanna listen to you! :) Overall, it was a good experience.
Day #4
On this day, I shadowed a hairdresser who is a dear family friend, and I watched closely as she taught me cut and coloring techniques. Later that day, I went to another family friend's house and watched as she did eyelash extensions. I also learned how it can be to run a business from home. I learned that both of the occupations take a gentle but skilled hand.
Day #5
Since I started early, this day would technically be Thursday, but I used the hours from Sunday and Monday to fill in this day.
So on Friday, I went to C.A.R.E animal shelter in Glenwood. I walked and played with the animals, and for me, this was a very therapeutic experience. I enjoyed learning about animal care and I hope to volunteer again. I wanted to adopt all of the animals!
